Conceptual frameworks and methods for advancing invasion ecology.

چکیده
Invasion ecology has much advanced since its early beginnings. Nevertheless, explanation, prediction, and management of biological invasions remain difficult. We argue that progress in invasion research can be accelerated by, first, pointing out difficulties this field is currently facing and, second, looking for measures to overcome them. We see basic and applied research in invasion ecology confronted with difficulties arising from (A) societal issues, e.g., disparate perceptions of invasive species; (B) the peculiarity of the invasion process, e.g., its complexity and context dependency; and (C) the scientific methodology, e.g., imprecise hypotheses. To overcome these difficulties, we propose three key measures: (1) a checklist for definitions to encourage explicit definitions; (2) implementation of a hierarchy of hypotheses (HoH), where general hypotheses branch into specific and precisely testable hypotheses; and (3) platforms for improved communication. These measures may significantly increase conceptual clarity and enhance communication, thus advancing invasion ecology.

Emergent insights from the synthesis of conceptual frameworks for biological invasions.
A general understanding of biological invasions will provide insights into fundamental ecological and evolutionary problems and contribute to more efficient and effective prediction, prevention and control of invasions. We review recent papers that have proposed conceptual frameworks for invasion biology. These papers offer important advances and signal a maturation of the field, but a broad sy...
متن کاملA proposed unified framework for biological invasions.
There has been a dramatic growth in research on biological invasions over the past 20 years, but a mature understanding of the field has been hampered because invasion biologists concerned with different taxa and different environments have largely adopted different model frameworks for the invasion process, resulting in a confusing range of concepts, terms and definitions. In this review, we p...
متن کاملBuilding a Comprehensive Conceptual Framework for Power Systems Resilience Metrics
Recently, the frequency and severity of natural and man-made disasters (extreme events), which have a high-impact low-frequency (HILF) property, are increased. These disasters can lead to extensive outages, damages, and costs in electric power systems. A power system must be built with “resilience” against disasters, which means its ability to withstand disasters efficiently while ensuring the ...
متن کاملInterface Ecology: An Open Conceptual Space of Collage and Emergence
The CollageMachine interactive artifact and the interface ecology theoretical framework are being codeveloped, through back and forth loops of reference on multiple levels. The open conceptual space of interface ecology enables the formation of cross-disciplinary connections that range beyond the confines of individual disciplines. CollageMachine has been created in this conceptual framework. I...
متن کاملLeveraging Comparisons between Cultural Frameworks: Preliminary Investigations of the MAUOC Ontological Ecology
Many theoretical cultural frameworks have been proposed in the literature. For comparisons and critiques of these frameworks to make sense, community members have to assign similar-enough meanings to the terms that they use when interacting. This entails overcoming the challenge of dealing with the imprecise and interpretable definitions conveyed in frameworks due to the use of common language....
